Hello,
My name is Annette Morand and I am the Community
Adaptation Coordinator for OCCIAR (The Ontario Centre for Climate
Impacts and Adaptation Resources), located at Laurentian University in
Sudbury, Ontario. I am contacting you because you were listed as
the main contact for your Citizen/Community/Neighbourhood Association.
We are holding a “Changing Climate Citizen Panel
Workshop” in Ottawa in late February/early March, 2012 which is free
of charge, and will give 20 regular citizens the opportunity to hear and
interact with climate change experts, make recommendations on Provincial
climate change policies, and have their opinions heard by government.
But we must get citizens to apply online first!

Letter from LCA to Mauril Belanger - Jan 18, 2012.pdf
Every year, the City of Ottawa dumps hundreds of millions of litres of untreated sewage directly into the Ottawa River. Now you have an opportunity to help stop this travesty once and for all. The province and the City of Ottawa have developed a plan, and the province and the city have both agreed to put up their fair share of the money. All we need is federal funding in the upcoming 2012 federal budget. Click here to let Ottawa area members of parliament know that you want action to clean up the river! http://ecologyottawa.ca/our-community/take-action/ottawa-river-action-plan/
The city has developed the Ottawa River Action Plan to address this issue and the plan is already delivering results. In June, the city announced that recent infrastructure upgrades have cut the untreated sewage going into the river by more than half compared to measurements of four years ago. However, in 2011, the city still discharged 417-million litres of combined sewage and rainwater into the river—that is the equivalent of almost 166 Olympic-sized swimming pools full of sewage!
City council would like to move forward with the next phase of the Ottawa River Action Plan—the construction of major combined sewage overflow (CSO) storage facilities. CSO storage facilities will lower the amount of contaminants released to the Ottawa River, improving the water quality and possibly reducing the number of beach closures.
According to Ottawa Riverkeeper Meredith Brown, who has endorsed this letter-writing campaign, it is imperative that the city moves ahead with the Ottawa River Action Plan, with or without federal support.
“But,” says Brown, “the Ottawa River is a key feature of the National Capital Region. The federal government should be doing everything it can to stop the dumping of untreated sewage in the river that runs through the nation’s capital.”
The province has indicated its willingness to contribute one-third of the cost, but the federal government has not yet made a similar commitment. We want to urge the federal government to commit to its third of the funding in the federal 2012 Budget. This is why we set-up an online letter writing campaign and we are asking you to go the website and write to your local Member of Parliament today: http://ecologyottawa.ca/our-community/take-action/ottawa-river-action-plan/
Please send a quick letter now to all Ottawa area MPs urging them to ensure that funding for the Ottawa River Action Plan is included in the federal 2012 Budget.
The health of our rivers depends on you demanding action from our elected officials today.

Subject: You are invited to CoSA Community Forum
Greetings!
I
would like to invite you to attend an information session about Circles
of Support and Accountability (CoSA) on Wednesday, March 7th,
5 to 7pm, at main branch of the Ottawa Public Library, 120
Metcalfe St at Laurier (in the auditorium, lower level). This
meeting is open to the public so feel free to extend the invitation to
someone who might be interested and/or bring along a friend – perhaps a
sceptic?
For those of you who are not familiar with CoSA, it is an initiative
inspired by restorative justice principles, pioneered by Canadians, to
safely and effectively reintegrate people back into community after
being incarcerated for committing sexual offences. It was started
in Hamilton in the mid 1990s in order to provide some support and
accountability for those released at the expiration of their sentences
without any parole supervision. Public safety is its primary goal.
The program has now expanded considerably, including to Ottawa; this
year, celebrating its 10th anniversary.
We hope you are able to attend. The attached poster contains all
pertinent details – feel free to post widely.
RSVP
(preferred, but drop-ins welcome, if capacity permits) to Susan Love,

Hello All,
Please find
attached the new Community Action Grant funding opportunity for local
community capacity building initiatives. The Community
Action Grant (CAG) is a collaborative approach to supporting residents’
engagement at the neighbourhood level. Presently, United Way Ottawa and
the City of Ottawa are pooling resources to give residents and community
groups an opportunity to develop their community action plans and local
initiatives in an effort to build healthy and strong neighbourhoods.
United Way Ottawa and the City of Ottawa have allocated $20,000 each for
a total of $40,000 for the 2011/2012 pilot phase of this collaborative
approach.
Any community
organization or residents’ association that is working with service
providers to improve their
neighbourhood is eligible for a grant of up to $2,000. The grant application must be
submitted by the local Community Health or Resource Centre on behalf of
the Community Organization or Resident’s Association. For the first year
of this pilot, only CDF and Strong Neighbourhoods identified priority
neighbourhoods will be considered for this funding. Other
neighbourhoods may also submit a request and will be considered on a
case by case basis.
There is no
deadline for the application as it is open year round.

Rural Crime
Prevention: A literature Review
Crime Prevention Ottawa (CPO) is exploring the issue of crime prevention
in the rural areas of the Ottawa region. As a first step we have
completed a literature review of rural crime prevention. A literature
review is a search of academic research studies that have looked at the
issue of crime prevention in rural contexts.
Understanding what is already known about rural crime – and how to
prevent it – is an important first step to addressing the situation in
the Ottawa area.
You can download or read the full report on our website.
Let us know if you are interested in working together to prevent rural
crime.
